The Sixth Sun

By Coyote Studio (Abigail Roscoe)

The Sixth Sun is a story about persistence, adaptation, sacrifice, and bravery in the face of unwelcome and seemingly unbeatable odds.

It isn’t often that I’m drawn to modern mythological interpretation; most of the time I find that the focus is still on the old gods’ old sensibilities, sometimes changed by offspring who are steeped in the modern world in a supernatural coming-of-age, born hero sort of tale.

This story is different; the gods exist, and have existed for eons. They carry burdens and memories of many lifetimes, and have been through rise and fall of both gods and man. Some are children or siblings, but each has their own presence. Their own personality. Their own fallibility.

In this world, there is an old god that lives in chaos. In laughter. In spontaneity and unpredictability. In the face of the setting of he fifth sun, a small band of young musicians are pulled into confronting the ennui that comes with living in a dying world, and given the impossible task of doing something about it.

Change comes through courage and insistence. Change can seem spontaneous and chaotic. Terrible and disruptive. Sometimes it truly is, and one’s world seems to crumble beneath one’s feet.

We find the strength to carry on through our friends, our family, our passions no matter how whimsical. We find the strength to weather change and radical challenges by seeing each other, listening, reaching out a hand to offer and accept support.

Change comes from being afraid and doing what needs to be done anyway. Sometimes with grief, often with discomfort and sometimes with great pain. Change requires qualities of leadership, and the best leaders are often reluctant.

The Sixth Sun is a story of hope in a world that would wish you’d stop fighting. The Sixth Sun is a story about insisting on life and joy. This is a story about a world that came way before us and will continue way after us. In this vast time stream we find joy in the little things, the moving moments between moments where we feel like we’re home, and content.

There is hope in finding joy, and there is joy in finding hope. No matter how things change, we hold each other up and move forward. Sometimes to save ourselves. Sometimes to save what matters in our world.

I am not paid to write this. I am paid for my concept artwork, but I genuinely love this series and its message comes at a very relevant time.

I believe art is a vital means of communication. Sterile recording of data and specimens is one thing; how humanity responds to those times and events is something that drives our society forward. Human art helps us avoid repeating mistakes, makes us think. To some it can be a means of connecting to times past to understand on a deeper level.

In a world of corporate cash-grabs and reboots, try something new and colorful!

The Sixth Sun is available on all podcast apps and sites, and the visual art portion is available on YouTube! If you watch the YouTube version, you’ll see some of my art that isn’t posted anywhere else :))
