Brown bear skull, Ammolite, Wood

This is the oldest bear skull I have had the pleasure of working on. As animals age, even beyond growing, their bones change. Sutures fuse. In carnivores especially, the bone becomes thick with the daily energy of supporting muscles.

This bear had almost no sutures at all. It had some very deep cavities in its molars, unusual for a wild animal. Carving this was sublime; broad surfaces to ride on and no gaps to jump.

It is in my best interest to use skulls of creatures that are old and healthy. I always prefer an animal alive and happy.
